Nottingham’s Lace History
Nottingham Lace is globally renowned for its history, quality and links with Royal wedding dresses, such as Diana and Kate Middleton.
The area in the city, known as The Lace Market, is a quarter of a mile square and in’s it’s peak of the British Empire it was the centre of the worlds lace industry. The high red brick Victorian buildings were once full of finishing rooms, salesrooms, store rooms and a place for people to meet and buy lace.
The heritage in this area is now protected and you can still soak up the Victorian atmosphere, with the narrow lanes and cobbled streets.
The Nottingham Lace we use in our luxury bridal garters, is made in a small town on the outskirts of Nottingham, using original lace looms to authentic vintage designs.
The Nottingham Lace Garter Co
Heidi founded Extra Special Touch in 2009, specialising in personalised embroidered wedding handkerchiefs, napkins and a range of Nottingham Lace garters.
Sister company The Nottingham Lace Garter Co was launched in 2020, as a dedicated space to showcase her luxury bridal garters.
Graduating from Art College, where she studied Theatrical Costume, Heidi has always had a love for vintage costume, traditional sewing techniques and a passion for lace & embroidery.
Her award winning UK business is based in the heart of Nottingham’s Sherwood Forest, in a converted Victorian hospital surrounded by woodland. Specialising in bridal & wedding accessories, Heidi and her team make each order from scratch. Only using locally made Nottingham lace, pure silk ribbons and beautiful trimmings; every bridal garter is handmade, before being carefully packaged and dispatched.
They proudly sell to customers all over the world, yet source their fabrics and laces locally fundamentally believing that supporting UK textiles is the right choice for the industry as well as the planet.
